Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup diced ham (preferably smoked or honey-glazed for extra flavor)

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a hint of sweetness)

1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped (for garnish)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 450°F (232°C). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until the mixture is well blended and free of lumps.

Incorporate Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with small pieces of butter still visible for flakiness.

Add Cheese and Ham: Carefully fold in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and diced ham with a spatula, ensuring an even distribution throughout the dry mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and honey (if using). Gradually pour this mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be cautious not to overmix; the dough should remain slightly sticky.

Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface, and gently pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Use a floured biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out individual biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space in between each one.

Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the biscuits with the beaten egg. This will give them a beautiful golden crust as they bake.

Bake the Biscuits: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool & Serve: Once baked, remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve them warm, garnished with a sprinkle of freshly chopped chives for added flavor and a pop of color.
