Go Back
The origins of Salisbury Steak date back to the late 19th century and are attributed to Dr. James H. Salisbury, an American physician who promoted a meat-based diet for health reasons. The dish was originally served as a minced beef patty, designed to be both nutritious and easy to digest. Over time, the recipe evolved, but the essence remains the same: a flavorful beef patty served with a rich gravy.

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup finely chopped onion

1/4 cup milk

1 medium egg

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

For the Brown Gravy:

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Prepare the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and fresh parsley. Mix these ingredients using your hands or a fork until just combined—be careful not to overmix. Shape the mixture into four oval patties, roughly 1/2-inch thick.

Cook the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a splash of cooking oil. Once the oil is shimmering, gently place the patties in the skillet. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Once cooked, transfer the patties to a plate and cover them to keep warm.

Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the butter. Allow it to melt fully. Next, whisk in the flour, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes until the mixture becomes golden brown and bubbly—a roux for your gravy. Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking continually to ensure there are no lumps. Incorporate the Worcestershire sauce and onion powder, then season with salt and pepper to taste.

Combine: Allow the gravy to simmer and thicken for about 5 minutes. Once thickened, carefully nestle the cooked patties back into the skillet with the gravy. Spoon additional gravy over the patties, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for an extra 5-10 minutes to meld the flavors.

Serve: Dish out the Salisbury steaks hot, generously drizzled with the rich brown gravy. They pair perfectly over a fluffy bed of mashed potatoes or alongside vibrant steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. For an elegant touch, sprinkle additional parsley on top before serving.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes | Servings: 4 servings.

Enjoy your deliciously savory Salisbury steak delight!
