Ingredients

8 oz (225 g) penne pasta

1 cup (240 ml) marinara sauce

1 cup (240 g) ricotta cheese

1 cup (100 g) grated mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup (50 g) grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar

1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

3 large eggs

1/4 cup (60 ml) whole milk

1/2 cup (50 g) all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 pinch salt

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures it reaches the perfect temperature for baking.

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente (usually about 8-10 minutes). Once done, drain the pasta and set it aside.

Prepare the Ricotta Mixture: In a spacious mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, granulated sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and eggs. Use a whisk to mix these ingredients until the mixture is smooth and creamy, ensuring everything is well incorporated.

Add Dry Ingredients: Sift the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt directly into the ricotta mixture. Gently fold these dry ingredients in using a spatula or wooden spoon, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix; a few lumps are okay!

Combine Ingredients: In another large bowl, pour the cooked penne pasta and add the marinara sauce. Stir until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce. Next, delicately fold in the ricotta mixture until every piece of pasta is well coated with the creamy filling.

Assemble the Bake: Prepare a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish by greasing it with cooking spray or butter. Pour half of the pasta mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle half of the grated mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over this layer. Add the remaining pasta mixture on top and finish with the rest of the cheese, ensuring a gooey, cheesy top layer.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes. You'll know it's ready when the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Cool and Serve: After baking, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes to set. If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor. Serve warm and enjoy every bite!
