Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (use panko for the ultimate crunch)

3 cloves garlic, finely minced

1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs (a blend of oregano, basil, and thyme)

1 teaspoon paprika for a hint of smokiness

1/2 teaspoon salt to taste

1/4 teaspoon black pepper for seasoning

1/4 cup unsweetened plant-based milk (options include almond, soy, or oat milk)

1 tablespoon soy sauce for umami flavor

Cooking oil (vegetable or canola) for frying

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: After thoroughly draining and pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture, cut it into bite-sized cubes (approximately 1-inch pieces). This uniformity will ensure even cooking and crispiness.

Make the Wet Batter: In a medium bowl, combine the plant-based milk and soy sauce. Whisk until well mixed. This mixture will serve as a coating for the tofu, helping the dry ingredients stick.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, breadcrumbs, minced garlic, dried Italian herbs, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir thoroughly to ensure the seasoning is evenly dispersed throughout the dry mixture.

Coat the Tofu Nuggets: Take each tofu cube and first dip it into the wet mixture, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. Then roll the tofu in the dry mixture, pressing gently to ensure it is fully coated.

Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, pour in about 1/4 inch of cooking oil and heat over medium heat. To test if the oil is hot, sprinkle a pinch of flour into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready for frying.

Fry the Tofu Nuggets: Carefully add the coated tofu nuggets to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the nuggets for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they turn a delightful golden brown and crispy.

Drain Excess Oil: Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to transfer the nuggets to a plate lined with paper towels. This will help absorb any excess oil and keep them crispy.

Serve and Enjoy: Serve the hot, crispy garlic herb tofu nuggets immediately with your favorite dipping sauces such as sweet chili sauce, vegan ranch, or a tangy barbecue sauce for an extra kick.
