Ingredients

12 ounces penne pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (combination of oregano, basil, and thyme)

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for a kick)

1 cup fresh basil leaves, roughly chopped

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

½ cup breadcrumbs (for topping)

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Cook the Pasta: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil, then add the penne pasta. Cook according to the package directions until al dente, which usually takes about 8-10 minutes. Once done, drain the pasta and set it aside.

Prepare the Sauce: While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes, or until it becomes translucent. Next, incorporate the minced garlic and continue to cook for an additional minute, stirring until fragrant.

Combine Ingredients: Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and heavy cream into the skillet, stirring to combine. Add the dried Italian herbs, then season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if desired. Allow the sauce to simmer gently for about 5-7 minutes, giving it time for the flavors to develop.

Mix in the Pasta: Remove the skillet from the heat and add the drained penne pasta along with the chopped fresh basil. Stir thoroughly to ensure every piece of pasta is evenly coated in the creamy tomato sauce.

Assemble the Bake: Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer half of the pasta mixture into the dish, spread it out to create an even base. Top this layer with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Add the remaining pasta mixture on top, then finish with the remaining mozzarella cheese and the grated Parmesan cheese.

Breadcrumb Topping: In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with a drizzle of olive oil until they are well-coated. Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over the top layer of cheese for an added crunch.

Bake: Place the assembled dish into the preheated oven. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is meltingly bubbly and has turned a lovely golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: After baking, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and freshness.
