Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

½ lb Italian sausage, casings removed

1 cup finely chopped onion

1 cup finely chopped bell pepper (green preferred)

1 cup finely chopped mushrooms

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

½ cup milk

1 large egg

2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp garlic powder

8 oz provolone cheese, sliced

½ cup chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Optional: additional cheese for topping (such as cheddar)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook the Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms to the skillet. Sauté the mixture for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and aromatic. Incorporate the minced garlic and continue to sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the vegetable blend cool slightly.

Combine the Meatloaf Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef and Italian sausage. Incorporate the sautéed vegetables along with the fresh breadcrumbs, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Using your hands, gently mix all the ingredients until just combined—be cautious not to overmix to ensure the meatloaf remains tender.

Form the Meatloaf: Transfer the combined meat mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or into a greased loaf pan. Shape the mixture into a classic loaf shape, measuring approximately 8 inches in length.

Incorporate the Cheese: With your fingers, create a trench down the center of the meatloaf. Layer half of the provolone cheese slices into the trench, ensuring they are well-distributed. Carefully fold the edges of the meat mixture back over the cheese, fully encasing it. Arrange the remaining slices of provolone cheese on top of the meatloaf for a deliciously cheesy finish.

Bake the Meatloaf: Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 45-60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reads 160°F (70°C) on a meat thermometer. If desired, during the last 10 minutes of baking, sprinkle additional cheese on top for an extra gooey texture.

Rest and Garnish: After baking, carefully remove the meatloaf from the oven and allow it to rest for about 10 minutes. This resting period helps the juices redistribute for a more flavorful slice. Before serving, garnish the meatloaf with freshly chopped parsley to add a burst of color.

Serve and Enjoy: Slice your Classic Philly Cheesesteak Meatloaf and serve it up with a side of creamy mashed potatoes or a vibrant fresh salad for a fulfilling and hearty meal!
