Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

1 cup packed brown sugar

½ cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped nuts (optional, walnuts or pecans are great choices)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by greasing it lightly with butter or non-stick spray, or line it with parchment paper for effortless removal once baked.

Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer set to medium speed to combine the softened butter with the packed brown sugar and granulated sugar. Beat these together until the mixture is creamy and smooth, which should take about 2-3 minutes.

Incorporate Eggs and Vanilla: Crack the eggs into the bowl, adding them one at a time. Mix well after each addition to ensure they are fully incorporated. Then, pour in the vanilla extract and blend until the mixture is homogeneous.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate medium-sized bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. This step ensures that the leavening agent and salt are evenly distributed throughout the flour.

Merge Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed. Stop mixing just when the flour is incorporated to avoid overworking the dough.

Fold in Chocolate Chips and Nuts: Using a spatula, gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips along with the optional chopped nuts. Make sure both are distributed evenly through the cookie dough.

Spread and Bake: Pour the cookie dough into your prepared baking pan, spreading it out evenly with a spatula. Smooth the top for a polished look. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are a lovely golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Cut: After baking, remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes. Once it has cooled slightly, use a sharp knife to slice the bars into squares or rectangles, and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy: These cookie bars are delightful served warm for an extra chewy texture, but they can also be enjoyed at room temperature. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week, although they may not last that long!

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 50 minutes | Servings: 24 bars

                      - Presentation Tips: For an elegant touch, dust the tops of the cooled cookie bars with a light sprinkling of powdered sugar, or serve them on a platter accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
