Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

1 lb ground beef (or for extra flavor, substitute with Italian sausage)

1 small onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

1 can (15 oz) ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Cook the Pasta:

    - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set it aside.

      Prepare the Meat Sauce:

        - In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or sausage) and cook until it turns brown, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, approximately 5-7 minutes.

          - Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes, until the onions become translucent and fragrant.

            Combine Ingredients:

              - Pour in the marinara sauce, and sprinkle in the dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Allow the mixture to simmer for about 5 minutes, which helps develop the flavors. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

                Make the Cheese Mixture:

                  - In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, and 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until the ingredients are well blended and creamy.

                    Assemble the Casserole:

                      - In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti pasta with the meat sauce, ensuring the pasta is evenly coated.

                        - Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish, and spread half of the ziti and meat sauce mixture evenly across the bottom. Dollop half of the ricotta cheese mixture over it and gently spread. Repeat the layering with the remaining ziti and cheese mixtures.

                          Top and Bake:

                            - Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the casserole. Cover the dish with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning during the initial baking period.

                              - Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove the foil and continue to bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

                                Garnish and Serve:

                                  - Once baked, take the casserole out of the oven and let it sit for 5-10 minutes to set. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor, if desired. Serve hot and savor a delicious slice of cheesy bliss!
